Dr. Marcony R. Santhiago was an intern during Medical school at the ophthalmology department, at the Mount Sinai - School of Medicine - New York - NY.  He completed ophthalmology residency in Rio and fellow in Cataract and Refractive Surgery at the University of São Paulo - USP.  Dr. Santhiago has a Doctorate (PhD) and Post-doctorate degree in ophthalmology by the University of São Paulo.  He was a fellow in Cornea and Refractive at the Cole Eye Institute from 2009 to 2012, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland OH and obtained a Post-doctorate in Visual Sciences, at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

 

Dr. Santhiago won the important Troutman Award and Waring Memorial Award, both conferred by the International Society of Refractive Surgery and by the American Academy of Ophthalmology for the scientific merit and relevant contribution in refractive surgery, AAO Achievement Award, conferred by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, ISRS Recognition Award conferred by the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Miguel Lafer Award for major scientific production among ophthalmologists at the USP, Latin America Research Award in Cornea conferred by the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, in addition to Best Scientific Video Award and Poster Winner Award by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Gold Medal for relevant contribution for Global Ophthalmology conferred by the Indian Society of Intraocular Implants and Refractive Surgery, the Milu Vilela Research Incentive Award, University of São Paulo, Best Scientific Paper at the Brazilian Congress of Ophthalmology.  

 

In 2017 he was acknowledged by The Ophthalmologist as one of the 40 most influential ophthalmologists worldwide with less than 40 years of age. 

 

He idealized the concept of Percentage of Tissue Altered, PTA and is a reviewer for the most important Ophthalmology journals worldwide. He has published over 120 papers in indexed international journals. Currently, he is a professor (PhD advisor) at University of São Paulo (currently advising 8 students at this University) and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, at University of Southern California, USC. He is also an Editorial Board member and Consultation Section Editor of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (JCRS), Editorial Board member and Associate Editor of the Journal of Refractive Surgery (JRS), Editorial Board member of the Brazilian Archives of Ophthalmology, ABO, Editor-in-chief of the Brazilian Journal of Ophthalmology, RBO and Director of Publications of the Brazilian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, BRASCRS and Director of Publications of the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology.  He is also Director of the Refractive Surgery program of the American Academy and the International Society of Refractive Surgery, ISRS, from 2017 to 2020.
